Abstract
The travel paths of South America, Africa, India, and Australia are constructed on the basis of plate positions at 20, 65 and 95 M.a. BP. These paths appear smooth, but would include sharp bends for the period between 95 and 140 M.a. BP for one of the two popular in Gondwana reconductions. The westerly Gondwana is therefore considered unrealistic. However, the easterly fit cannot be rejected outright on the basis of continental displacement paths if Antarctica moved over the mantle between 95 and 140 M.a. BP. A new Gondwana is possible by extrapolation of the smooth continental travel paths of the last 95 M.a. to 140 M.a. BP; one where India lay between Africa and Antarctica. This leaves two possible fits of the southern continents in Gondwana, which are both consistent with current geological and geophysical knowledge. One implications is that the rich South Africanore province may continue in the Precambrian basement of India rather than Antarctica.
