Abstract

Zinc oxide synthesized by precipitation method was impregnated on alumina and characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD, UVDRS, IR and TGA. The band gap of ZnO-Al2O3sintered at 400 °C was found to be 3.35 eV. In the present study on solar irradiation of Thymol blue, selected as a model dye, zinc oxide and zinc oxide-alumina were employed for the degradation studies. It was observed that for a dye concentration of 200 ppm, the quantity of zinc oxide (as ZnO-Al2O3; 0.25% w/v) required for optimum degradation was found to be one fourth of zinc oxide without alumina, employed in solar degradation.
