Abstract

There is an increasing demand in finding efficient and inexpensive catalysts that can produce large quantities of hydrogen gas from water. An ideal electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolving cathodes in aqueous media should be cheap, should have a low overvoltage for hydrogen evolution, stable to abuse and long electrode life. Different molybdenum-based compounds have been investigated for hydrogen production that includes metallic molybdenum, nickel-molybdenum alloys, molybdenum sulfides, molybdenum carbides, molybdenum nitrides and molybdenum complexes. The chapter starts with a brief introduction on the importance of hydrogen and basics of water electrolysis which was followed by an account of the current research scenario on molybdenum-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen generation by water electrolysis.
