Abstract

Different polythene and plastic products have become part of our lives. But this luxury has been a necessary evil since it has severe environmental and human health consequences. Plastics and polythene release lethal chemicals with dangerous environmental effects. Since plastics are non-biodegradable, they are thrown into the environment that causes a disaster of pollution. Plastics and plastic products are discarded in the environment through different mechanisms. The different methods that are currently used for degradation have their own advantages and disadvantages. Methods such as the physical and chemical methods of xenobiotic product degra-dation such as plastics offer no ecological solutions to overcome the environmental dumping of plastics. However, microorganisms that are used in this direction are considered safe and environmentally sound since microorganisms are believed to play an important role in the biodegradation of materials in natural environments. A detailed account of plastic and polythene bioremediation using microbes is presented in this chapter.
