Abstract

This comparison of results of crack opening displacement (COD) measurements using conventional and double-notch specimens leads to the conclusion that the double-notch method is easier and cheaper and the results obtained are in good agreement with those of conventional measurements. It is also shown that the effect of a number of metallurgical parameters on the toughness of medium-strength steels can be determined accurately with the double-notch specimen.
