Abstract

Medication nonadherence is one of the severe and challenging issues in global healthcare systems, resulting in poor health outcomes, increased number of hospitalizations, and economic burdens. This paper describes MedDose, a smart and user-friendly application that improves medication adherence using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies. The main features of this application include prescription scanning using Optical Character Recognition (OCR), personalized medication notifications, inventory tracking, and a doctor locator feature. The OCR, a major component of this application, achieves over $97 \%$ accuracy for typed prescriptions and more than $78 \%$ for handwritten ones, improves prescription management by reducing human errors. Further, the IoT components allow real-time adherence tracking to provide convenience. Moreover, MedDose is designed to be inclusive, servicing to diverse user groups, including the elderly and patients with cognitive impairments. This research addresses the challenges related to ensuring data privacy through automation and improving the accuracy of handwritten prescriptions. MedDose is made as an open-source, and scalable application system designed to promote compliance with medication therapy leveraging the trans-formative impact of AI and IoT on healthcare.
