Abstract
This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing various grades of silicomanganese (SiMn) fume, categorized by fineness, as a sustainable supplementary cementitious material (SCM) in concrete. SiMn fume, a manganese-rich byproduct of the ferroalloy industry, was incorporated as a partial cement replacement (20%) to evaluate its effects on compressive strength at 7, 28, and 90 days under two curing regimes: water curing and steam curing. Results revealed that the finest grade of SiMn fume consistently outperformed coarser grades, demonstrating superior mechanical properties and enhanced durability. Beyond mechanical improvements, the inclusion of SiMn fume offers substantial environmental benefits. By reducing cement consumption, SiMn fume significantly lowers the carbon footprint of concrete, addressing the urgent need for sustainable and eco-friendly construction materials. This approach aligns with circular economy principles, repurposing industrial waste to minimize landfill disposal while promoting resource efficiency and waste valorisation. The findings establish SiMn fume as a viable SCM capable of delivering dual benefits: improved mechanical performance and reduced environmental impact. By leveraging SiMn fume, this study demonstrates a pathway to achieving carbon reduction targets in the construction sector while fostering the adoption of innovative, sustainable materials. This work represents a step forward in advancing SCM adoption, paving the way for greener infrastructure development and contributing to the global transition toward sustainable construction practices.
