Abstract

THE ARTICLE REVIEWS SOME TYPICAL FAULTS ENCOUNTERED IN RAILS AND SHOWS HOW FRACTURE MECHANICS CAN BE USED IN TREATING THE MAJOR PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH OPERATIONAL FAILURES OF THE RAILS. TOUGHNESS DEVELOPMENT IN RAIL STEELS UNDER DYNAMIC STRESS IS CONSIDERED. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS FOR QUASI-STATIC AND DYNAMIC LOADING OF STEEL SPECIMENS ARE CONSIDERED POINTING OUT THEIR LIMITATIONS IN MEASURING DYNAMIC TOUGHNESS. RESULTS OF EXAMINING FRACTURE SURFACES ARE PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED. IN FRENCH.
