Abstract

A new method is presented to estimate the maximum power transfer at the point of voltage collapse on the characteristic PV-Curve for different load models. The method, which we call Modal Sensitivity Analysis (MSA), is based on Eigenvalue sensitivities to parametric variations. The parameter of interest is the system load, which is varied while assuming constant power factor. A quadratic approximation using the Eigenvalue sensitivities at a suitably selected stressed load level, has been used and has yielded reliable results for different test systems. The method is computationally efficient and very useful from an operator's point of view.
