Abstract

Magnetization and spectroscopic studies were carried out on [Co(Hafdo)2X2] complexes X being the monodentate O, S, P, As and Se donor ligands attached to the axial positions. Cobalt(II) undergoes air oxidation to cobalt(III), when a strong-field ligand is attached to the axial positions but when water is the axial ligand, the oxidation of cobalt(II) was not observed. The [Co(Hafdo)2X2] moiety exhibits intramolecular short hydrogen bond with the glyoximes occupying the equatorial plane and the monodentate ligands attached to the axial positions. The mole fraction of cobalt(II) in the paramagnetic [Co(Hafdo)2(H2O)2] complex, calculated from the magnetization data, is from 0.14-0.18 for the temperature range of 4.2 to 30 K.
