Abstract

We have simulated the tuning range of an erbium doped fiber ring laser (EDFRL) as a function of the active fiber length and pumping configuration. It is found that an optimized erbium doped fiber (EDF) length and appropriate pumping configuration is required to achieve the widest tuning range. In addition, forward and bidirectional pumping configurations are compared to find the best-case scenario. The results show that a bidirectional pumping configuration provides a wider tuning range (1525 nm-1645 nm =120 nm) than the forward pumping configuration (1528 nm-1625 nm =97 nm).
