Abstract
This paper deals with the large-signal analysis of linearized electrooptic modulators. Closed-form expressions are obtained for the nonlinear transfer functions of a number of linearized electrooptic modulators comprising directional couplers and Mach-Zehnder modulators. Based on these expressions a black-box model for the linearized electrooptic modulators is obtained. This black-box model comprises a number of nonlinear subsystems. Fourier-series approximations are obtained for the transfer functions of these nonlinear subsystems. These Fourier-series approximations yield closed-form expressions for the amplitudes of the harmonic and intermodulation products at the output of a linearized electrooptic modulator excited by a large amplitude multisinusoidal input signal. Examples are given to illustrate the use of these expressions for calculating the parameters required to cancel a specific intermodulation or harmonic component.
