Abstract

Because of the importance of pulsatile flow in medical science and in various other engineering applications, considerable attention has been focused on the analysis of unsteady laminar Newtonian fluid flow in rigid tubes. It appears that all previous analyses of laminar pulsatile tube or boundary layer flow have been restricted to the cases for which the axial pressure gradient, is the specified input parameter. Instruments that operate on the doppler principle have recently been developed to permit the non-invasive measurement of V(t) in arteries that are near the skin surface. Because of the general availability of information pertaining to V(t), and because the axial pressure gradientis not always known a priori, the development of a solution for laminar flow with specified periodic flow rate is desirable. This paper presents an analysis of laminar hydrodynamically developed pulsatile flow with sinusoidal flow rate. Predictions are presented for the instantaneous velocity profile and Fanning friction factor for several values of the parameter.
