Abstract
The UK is lagging behind in the industrial exploitation of surface engineering. Fierce internal competition and the lack of a strong trade association have harmed the international prospects of British companies. This article suggests a solution to the problem, based on the initiation of major industry-driven, product-led research projects which can bring industry and research centres together.
