Abstract

The flat dilatometer has been frequently used for soil investigations in engineering practice because of its simplicity, rapid and repetitive use. This paper described the calibration of a flat rigid dilatometer (NDMT) in a low to medium plasticity cohesive soil. The discussion concentrated on the comparison of soil classification, unit weight, undrained shear strength, and stiffness of the soil determined through NDMT tests and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests. Based on the geotechnical characterization of the test bed, an attempt was made to establish the usefulness of NDMT for in situ testing of widespread cohesive soil deposits in the Punjab province of Pakistan. Correlations have been proposed between NDMT parameters and UCS test results to estimate necessary soil properties for site characterization and design of foundations on such soils.
