Abstract

DC power distribution has recently been the foremost trend to gather the rapid rising of energy demand and, instantaneously, to challenge environmental issues coming from non-renewable energy sources. Therefore, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are employed in DC grids to guarantee consistent and reasonable energy intended for the industrial applications of upcoming mobile power systems, such as electric aircraft and ships. Shipboard Power Systems (SPS) with DC capability has been proposed as a promising solution for stringent regulations on ships because of their major profits in fuel savings with variable speed drives and simple utilization of Energy Storage Systems (ESS). In this paper, an electric ship is proposed as a case study based on Solid-State Transformer (SST) in addition to Multi-Modular Converter (MMC) to meet the large-scale power system requirements. A decouple control of Input-Series Output-Parallel (ISOP) SST is proposed with the control of the front-end MMC converter. The overall system is implemented and experimented based on Control-Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHiL) platform to confirm the performance and discuss the results.
