Abstract
This study is concerned with the influence of a single-peak overload on the subsequent growth of fatigue cracks in steels. A study of the overload rate showed that the higher the rate, the greater the retardation. The crack propagation rate and the crack opening load were measured during all tests; it was shown that ELBER's crack testing steels of different strength. It seems that the residual stresses induced by the overload are the major factor causing retardation. Two models, based on the calculation of these stresses, are analyzed.
