Abstract

Since the peak in the demand for electricity in Middle Eastern countries partially coincides with the peak of solar irradiation, solar energy can be used to shave the demand curve peak. This paper presents a solution based on PV technology to improve the demand curve in such systems, then compares it to techniques based solely on battery energy storage systems. In the proposed solution, the system model shall consist of thermal generation, PV generation, and battery based energy storage systems, to meet typical loading conditions. The main objective of this research is to minimize the variation in the thermal generation while maintaining the availability and reliability indices of the system within acceptable ranges. The modeled system shall be solved using linear programming optimization techniques.
