Abstract

Improved HDS catalysts were developed at the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia using different approaches. The results from some recent studies carried out at KFUPM are discussed, including the effect of [Co/(Co+Mo)] ratio in CoMo/ Al2O3 catalysts on HDS pathways of benzothiophene and dibenzothiophene. The role of phosphorus addition on simultaneous HDS of dibenzothiophene and alkyl dibenzothiophenes over CoMo/ Al2O3 catalysts is also examined, along with the deep HDS of gas oil over NiMo catalysts supported on Al2O3-Zri2O3composites. The improvements in catalytic performance were due to the incorporation of proper ratio of active metals, addition of a second promoter, and application of novel composite support. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 23rd Annual Saudi-Japan Symposium on Catalysts in Petroleum Refining and Petrochemicals 2013 (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia 12/2-3/2013).
