Abstract

Tiruchirappalli is the most important city located at the centre of the state of Tamil Nadu. A Tributary of river Cauvery, Uyyakondan channel flows in the heart of the city. The hospital and domestic sewage contribute the source of pollution in channel water. The physical parameters like temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), the chemical parameters, such as carbonate, bicarbonate, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), calcium, magnesium, chloride, nitrite, phosphate and the bacteriological activities of total coliform and fecal coliform have been analysed. The results show that the sewage water deteriorates the quality of channel water significantly. The paper presents a preliminary study on the effect of discharge of untreated sewage water into the channel.
