Abstract

Intermittency of renewable energy resources makes reactive power management a challenge in microgrids. Since standards do not recommend the use of distributed energy resources (DERs) for voltage regulation and reactive power management in microgrids, therefore, traditionally, locally controlled Distribution STATic COMpensators (DSTATCOM) are widely used. The management of reactive power requirement in microgrids can be improved through communication-based coordinated operation of DERs and DSTATCOM. To make this communication standardized and interoperable, this paper presents modeling of DSTATCOM as per IEC 61850 and an eXtensible Message Presence Protocol (XMPP) for providing scalability and information security. The mapping of IEC 61850 Abstract Communication Service Interface services over MMS ASN.1 XER (XMPP - web protocol) to transform the basic MMS type message into an XML message for their use in XMPP communication is also demonstrated.
