Abstract
Reaction of (H2C=CHCH2)2NCH2CO2Na with ClCH2CO2Na afforded zwitterionic-anionic (H2C=CHCH2)2N+(CH2CO2‐)CH2CO2‐Na+ (I) and cationic monomer [(H2C=CHCH2)2N+(CH2CO2H)2 • Cl‐] (II). I and II underwent cyclopolymerization to give polyzwitterion-anion (PZA) III and polyzwitterion (PZ) IV, respectively. Monomer II/SO2 and II/maleic acid pairs upon copolymerization led to zwitterionic poly[(II-HCl)-alt-SO2] (PZS) V and poly[(II-HCl)-alt-maleic acid] (PZM) VI, respectively. III-VI having repeating units containing residues of iminodiacetic acid [NH(CH2CO2H)2] have been tested as antiscalants and corrosion inhibitor. As an antiscalant, PZM VI at 1 ppm imparted 99% inhibition of CaSO4 scale formation from a supersaturated solution of Ca2+ and SO42− for a duration of 40 min, enough to safeguard desalination membranes from scale fouling. PZ IV (100 ppm) combined with KI (400 ppm) demonstrated a synergistic 93% corrosion inhibition of mild steel in 15% HCl for 6 h at 60 °C. The polymers may find applications in desalination as antiscalants and oil well acidization as corrosion inhibitors.
