Abstract

Upgrading of heavy oils using iron based multi-component catalysts was studied. The prepared Fe-Zr-Al catalysts were evaluated in a batch autoclave reactor using bitumen as feedstock. Dilution of feed with toluene showed significant effects in the low concentration level. Gas formation slightly increased with increasing bitumen concentration in the feed. Gasoil, VGO, VR fractions remained almost unaffected with the variation of the feed concentration. The extra heavy oil slightly decreased with increasing feed concentration from 10 wt % bitumen to 20 wt % bitumen, above this concentration range no noticeable change was observed. Coke formation also increased at higher bitumen concentration in the feed and at high pressure, indicating the negative impact of higher concentration and higher pressure on the catalyst performance.
