Haplophragmoides arcticus, n. sp. – a new species from the Pleistocene of the Central Arctic Ocean

Abstract

A new agglutinated benthic foraminifer, Haplophragmoides arcticus, n.sp., is described from the Middle Pleistocene of Core 87/030-1 collected from the Lomonosov Ridge, Central Arctic Ocean. The species is characterized by its deep umbilicus, and circular outline that becomes lobate in the youngest part of the test. The adult specimens have eight triangular chambers in the final whorl. The species is found in an assemblage consisting entirely of agglutinated foraminifera. The species shows closest affinity to some Paleogene species described from flysch-type assemblages, and may have regional stratigraphic importance for the Arctic Pleistocene.
