Abstract
The guided-power-mode-index relationship is obtained for waveguides with linear graded-index films topped with a nonlinear layer having self-focusing Kerr-like nonlinearity. The graded-index film waveguides are modeled on those resulting from a process of diffusion. The profiles are delineated as design parameters. The dispersion relations of TE modes are shown to be sensitive to index profile changes, indicating potential uses for nonlinear layers in the measurement of profiling and diffusion parameters of planar waveguides.
