Abstract

Corrosion losses can be effectively controlled using coatings. Due to toxic nature of inorganic coatings, people have started to explore organic and natural materials based coatings. The pointed gourd seeds (PGS) are employed in this work to save mild steel (MS) from corrosion attack in 0.5 M NaCl. The PGS extract has been made in ethanol and named EEPGS. It is characterized by UV-visible (US) as well as FTIR spectroscopy (FS). The EEPGS layers are developed on MS’s surface via drop casting (DC). The examination of the performance of EEPGS coatings has been done with open circuit potential (OCP), Tafel polarization curves (TPC), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The EEPGS coating (4 layers) has provided the largest saving of MS (94%) in NaCl. The EEPGS coatings have restricted the entry of NaCl to MS, which could be quoted as the main reason for saving. The saving of MS by EEPGS is presented on the basis of the investigation and explained with a schematic.
