Abstract
This paper presents the generalization of the notation for the equal area criterion of power system transient stability and the identification of the various possible cases of single machine infinite bus test system that can be analyzed by the equal area criterion method. The work presented here investigates the various aspects of the dynamic performance of the power system at the level of the SMIB system and is intended for senior level undergraduate and graduate students and instructors of power system stability courses as a teaching aid. The cases presented here can be used to cover complete analysis of the power system stability problem and for the comprehension of the method. Some of the cases are very complex and require care in the derivation and solution method. Both lossless and lossy cases have been presented alongwith corresponding power-angle equations and plots.
