Abstract
This paper presents a formulation for multiphase flash calculations in general, similar to the one used in Mehra et al. A general acceleration procedure for successive substitution based on the quasi-Newton methods is then derived which wields numerous acceleration schemes. A stability test algorithm using the same acceleration technique is also imbedded in the flash calculation. This allows the determination of the correct number of phases, and the appearance and disappearance of a phase between iterations. (from paper)
