Abstract
Two of the preservatives normally added to methylene chloride (cyclohexene and amylene) were found to result in the formation of several artifacts during the liquid/ liquid extraction of saline water in acidic media after chlorination. The artifacts formed depended on the combined effect of the preservative used, the presence of bromide ions, and the presence of residual chlorine. The presence of these artifacts may result in serious interference during the analysis of the extractable organic pollutants. To avoid this problem, the addition of sodium thiosulfate before extracting the water samples was recommended. The reaction byproducts formed under various experimental conditions were investigated and identified by GC/MS.
