Abstract

Corrosion is a major problem in industries. It leads to tremendous economic losses in every country. It has been estimated that the corrosion damage costs are currently USD 2.8 billion, equivalent to 4-5% of gross national product. The use of corrosion inhibitors is one of the best options for corrosion control due to ease of application and cost effectiveness. This book chapter overviews fundamental aspects of corrosion inhibitors such as phenomenology, mechanism of corrosion inhibition, and factors affecting corrosion inhibition emphasizing the development of green and sustainable corrosion inhibitors. Factors affecting corrosion inhibition, the effect of molecular structure on performance of corrosion inhibitors, guidelines for the synthesis of potential corrosion inhibitors using the principle of green chemistry are discussed. Finally, the application of corrosion inhibitors in various corrosion environments encountered in the industry has been described.
