Abstract

The Committee on Fuel Cell Materials Technology in Vehicular Propulsion focused on technological limitations, especially materials and electrochemical limitations, that need to be resolved. The fuel cell systems evaluated include those based on acid, polymer, alkaline, solid oxide, and molten carbonate electrolytes. Consideration was given to compatibility between these fuel cells and logistic fuels, including petroleum derivatives, synthetic hydrocarbons from coal and shale, and hydrogen from nuclear energy. Applications included consumer vehicles, delivery vans, city buses, trucks, locomotives, and push-tow boats. Summarized in this report are research and development activities that, if pursued successfully, would bring fuel cell performance to a level suitable for transportation applications. Refs.
