Abstract

The rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) necessitates efficient and scalable charging station architectures. This paper presents a comprehensive comparative analysis of three structures for EV charging stations: a microgrid-based solution, an isolated four-port converter with separate photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage (BES) ports, and an integrated four-port solution featuring two dedicated ports for EVs. The comparison focuses on the number of components, isolation requirements, and operational efficiency, with particular emphasis on ensuring compliance with international safety standards for port isolation. A detailed discussion of the isolation requirements for each port is provided to highlight their implications for safety and system design. Simulation results validate the operational feasibility of each topology, demonstrating the trade-offs among component count, isolation strategies, and system performance. This analysis provides actionable insights into designing compact and cost-effective EV charging stations with dual EV connectivity.
