Abstract

Flow in a channel subjected to a porous block is investigated and entropy generation rate in the flow field is computed. In order to investigate the effects of body aspect ratio and porosity on the flow field and entropy generation rate, five aspect ratios of the block and two porosities are accommodated in the simulations. A solid block with the same dimensions and aspect ratios is also included in the simulations for comparison purposes. Air is used as the working fluid, while a constant flux heat source is introduced in the porous block situated in the channel. It is found that increasing porosity lowers the entropy generation rate due to improved heat transfer and reduced fluid friction. In addition, the aspect ratio of the porous body has a significant effect on the entropy generation rate.
