Abstract

The gamma ray induced degradation of synthetic dye Reactive Orange (O 122) having concentration 50, 100 and 150 mg/l was carried out with 2, 4, 6 and 8 kGy gamma ray absorbed doses alone and then in conjunction with hydrogen peroxide (oxidant). The change in absorbance, pH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was analysed after each treatment. The results indicate that complete colour bleaching and 84% COD reduction was achieved at 8 kGy. Parameters such as D0.5, D0.9, D0.99, dose constant were also evaluated. This method can be extended to treat industrial wastewater.
