Enhancing the Machinability of Titanium Alloys for Renewable Energy Applications Using Laser-Textured and Coated Cutting Tools

Abstract

Titanium alloys are crucial in renewable energy applications due to their excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, their low machinability, high cutting forces, and rapid tool wear present significant manufacturing challenges. This study examines how laser surface texturing and physical vapor deposition coatings influence the performance of cutting tools when machining titanium alloys. Two different processing sequences are investigated: laser texturing is applied before coating and another where the coating is applied first, followed by laser texturing. The research first evaluates the effectiveness of textured tools in their uncoated state, focusing on their ability to minimize friction and manage heat generation. The coated tools are then analyzed to determine how the order of texturing and coating affects tool wear, cutting efficiency and surface finish. By comparing both approaches, this study provides insights into optimizing tool performance and extending tool life, ultimately contributing to more efficient and sustainable machining strategies for titanium alloys in renewable energy applications.
