Abstract
This paper presents a transformative teaching approach implemented in a petroleum engineering course at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), aimed at improving one of the course learning outcomes (CLO). Historically, students have struggled with the CLO, prompting a shift from traditional lecturing to a blend of active learning, collaborative learning, and technology integration using the SAMR model. The method integrates active learning through industry-linked lab visits, collaborative learning via group-based analysis of real-world data from an offshore field, and technology-enhanced learning through student-produced video presentations. Statistical analysis comparing cohorts from 2023 and 2025 reveals a significant improvement in CLO performance, with a 14.3-point increase in mean scores and higher median scores, suggesting that these strategies are effective in enhancing learning outcomes. This paper discusses the theoretical underpinnings, implementation process, and broader application of the method, which helps to give insights for educators in higher education.
