Energy efficiency of residential buildings in the kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Review of status and future roadmap

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive literature review specific to energy efficiency programs and policies suitable for new and existing residential buildings in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In particular, detailed analyses of energy use data as well as recently reported household energy surveys are presented to identify the common housing types, energy use patterns and behavioral characteristics of Saudi households. Moreover, the paper reviews current programs, codes/standards, and related activities by the government regulatory authorities to enhance and promote energy efficiency for residential buildings. As part of the review, the existing literature has been evaluated to assess the effectiveness of a wide range of energy efficiency technologies and strategies and their applicability to the Saudi housing stock. Potential roadmap recommendations are presented to steer future energy policies as well as guide required research work to enhance energy efficiency of Saudi residential buildings.
