Abstract

The effects of a small-defect wake on the flow over a backward-facing step flow with a step height of 3 cm were investigated over a Reynolds number range of 8000 to 30000. The wake was created by placing a 3 mm diameter cylinder at various x and y positions. For the cylinder position of x = 0 cm and y = 3.25 cm, the maximum change in the wall static pressure and turbulence intensity took place. Under this condition, the pressure decreased, the reattachment point moved downstream by about 2 step heights and the turbulence intensity increased dramatically over the entire flow field. The change in the pressure was primarily due to the increased acceleration of the flow between the cylinder and the upper step wall, while the increase in the turbulence intensity was due to the extra strain rate caused by the cylinder wake.
