Abstract

Several large electric utilities in the western United States have installed series capacitors on their transmission systems. With series compensation, currents at subsynchronous frequencies can be generated by faults or system switching. This paper examines the effect of subsynchronous current on a static mho type distance relay. Customarily, the reach of a distance relay is examined on an R-X diagram. However, when the voltage or current contains components of different frequencies, the conventional R-X diagram method has very little physical meaning without special interpretation. Therefore, this paper examines a static distance relay reach with a different approach - the voltage wave coincidence method so that the effect of subsynchronous current can be included. It requires large quantities of computations and a computer program was written to carry out that task.
