Abstract
This paper describes the problem of the development of a digital model of a static compensator. A fixed capacitor thyristor controlled reactor (FC-TCR) is to be modelled and its effect on power system dynamics will be investigated. FC-TCR is modelled as a controlled voltage source of magnitude E and fixed reactance X. This representation of the FC-TCR enables the investigators to incorporate the model easily in a transient stability program as an additional machine with particular constraints. The FC-TCR compensator proved to be effective in damping oscillations following a large scale disturbance, and in controlling voltage fluctuations after a load rejection. These conclusions were drawn when the FC-TCR compensator was adopted as a static compensator for a small multimachine power system.
