Abstract

A new modification of the charge simulation technique is presented for treating electric field problems, especially around surface protrusions from hv conductors. The method is based on introducing a known initial set of charges which are deduced from the analysis of a similar but simpler problem. Good estimate of these charges in addition to a set of unknown charges are used to simulate the conductor with its protrusion. The better the initial charges the lower will be the unknown charges, and the computational time. The present method has no restrictions as regards the shape of protrusion. The method offers easy means for checking empirical formulae of field calculations near protrusions and for predicting accurately experimental corona results. The method is more reliable in assessing the influence of surface protrusions on the breakdown performance of gas-insulated system as well as in the analysis of corona performance of water drops hanging from hv conductors.
