Abstract

Traditional whiteboards, while widely used in educational and professional settings around the world, suffer from limitations such as lack of interactivity, static content presentation, and the inability to save or manipulate information. Digital whiteboards and touchscreen systems, although offering advanced features, are often prohibitively expensive, require complex installations, and are highly sensitive and costly. To address these issues and revolutionize traditional whiteboards at a minimal cost, we propose a novel, real-time, interactive system that can be used on any surface, including walls, whiteboards, or even any kind of surface. Our system combines affordable components an infrared (IR) pen, a standard webcam, and a basic projector, along with advanced computer vision techniques. The proposed approach operates in three main stages: first, analyzing the webcam image to detect the IR pen; second, applying geometrical transformation theory to align the webcam view with the projected content; and third, translating the detected IR pen position into computer cursor movement, effectively turning any surface into an interactive display. The system achieves impressive results with a latency of only 0.033 seconds (30 fps) and 99% accuracy in editing at the exact desired point. Users can write, modify, edit, and draw directly on the projected content using the IR pen, offering a highly interactive and immersive experience. The practicality and versatility of the system have been demonstrated in various experiments, showcasing its potential to enhance interactive lectures, webinars, presentations, and educational interfaces, all at a fraction of the cost of conventional digital whiteboards.
