Abstract
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is devoid of rivers, and with scanty precipitation the groundwater reserves are the only reliable source of water supply apart from costly desalination of sea water. Discusses the quality of the groundwater and its suitability for various uses. The development of various aquifers is described. Problems include lowering of water levels, deterioration in quality in the absence of recharge, lack of detailed information for the proper location of wells, incompatibility of well screens with respect to aquifer formation, corrosion and incrustation of well components, difficulties in replacing groundwater by sea water for oilfield injection, and lack of good irrigation practices. Some possible solutions are suggested.-from Author
