Developing a Computer Engineering Relative-Unit Value System (CE-RUV) for Undergraduate Education: Framework, Validation, and Pilot Plan

Abstract

Traditional assessment methods of experiential learning in Computer Engineering (CE) education are often fraught with inconsistencies and subjectivity. This paper presents the adaptation of the Integrated Educational Relative-Unit Value (IE-RUV) system, initially proposed for dental education, to a Computer Engineering Relative-Unit Value (CE-RUV) system. The CE-RUV system defines a fundamental unit value as 30 minutes of effective, verifiable engineering work, supported by a scoring formula with multipliers for task complexity, quality, independence, and impact. Detailed task taxonomies are developed for capstone projects, design labs, research projects, and coop/internships. A multi-phase plan is outlined for validation that includes expert consensus and pilot testing. The implementation strategy incorporates anti-gaming controls and addresses alignment with ABET student outcomes. Thus, the CE-RUV system forms a structured, transparent, and scalable approach that enhances objectivity and granularity in the assessment of varied learning activities. This framework has been explicitly developed for use within Computer Engineering education; however, it can be adapted to other engineering disciplines and STEM areas if appropriate domain-specific task taxonomies are developed.
