Abstract

A procedure for fitting reliability models to fatigue life data has been developed. The proposed procedure has been applied to life data of 300 small rotating beam specimens tested at three different stress levels. The decision on adequacy of a reliability model to represent life-time data has been a statistical one for large sets of data whereas for small data sets the statistical decision on adequacy of the model has been complemented by additional design criteria of: desired level of reliability, factor of safety, and operating environment of the component.
