Design and Validation of 5-Level Unity Gain Inverter Topology with Open-Circuit Fault-Tolerant Capability

Abstract

With the switched-capacitor based topologies, voltage rating of capacitors has been a critical issue for high voltage applications. In this paper, a new five-level unity gain inverter (5L-UGI) topology has been proposed which uses low voltage rating devices. With the voltage rating of all capacitors used in the proposed 5L-UGI topology being half of the peak of output voltage, the cost of the topology is relatively less. Further, a fault-tolerant topology derived from the developed 5L-UGI has been discussed which is capable of handling single-switch open circuit faults and can restore the pre-fault conditions. A comparative study has been provided to show the improvement in the proposed topology. Finally, the proposed 5L-UGI topology has been verified with simulation results for different operating conditions.
