Abstract

The Electric Spring (ES) is a new technology which has recently come to the horizon in smart grid area. This technology carries great potential in stabilizing the future smart grid by regulating the main voltage despite the fluctuation in the output power of the intermittent renewable energy sources. Extending applications of electric spring are giving a new vision of the power system operation with reduced dependency on communication technology. This paper develops and proposes a new approach of demand side management using electric spring to regulate the main voltage and allow the smart load to follow the power generation profile. AC and DC PI voltage controllers are optimally designed using genetic algorithms (GA) with the objective of minimizing the error of the measured voltage. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed controllers are investigated in sudden change and multiple disturbances operating conditions. The simulations results show the effectiveness of the proposed controllers to enhance the electric spring for voltage regulation.
