Abstract
Realistic knowledge of liability index/proneness of coal towards spontaneous heating is extremely useful in working out strategies for prevention and control of fire due to spontaneous in coal mines. In India, crossing point temperature is generally adopted for the above purpose. The method, though effective, but defines only advanced stage of oxidation. The authors based on a set of experience in the laboratory have defined a new index 'critical temperature ' which can categorized the coal in respect of their susceptibility towards spontaneous heating much in advance compared to the existing method/indices. The results when compared with crossing point temperature show good correlation. The paper discusses review of the subject, the details of the experimental procedure adopted for determination of critical temperature and its correlation with crossing point temperatures.
