Abstract
Methane conversion, which entails changing the most basic hydrocarbon molecule with low reactivity, is an important and dynamic topic of research in chemical and electrochemical catalysis. In this chapter, we give an overview of the essential concepts underlying methane conversion processes, including direct methods like oxidative and nonoxidative aromatization of methane as well as indirect methods like steam and dry reforming of methane. We also go into the intricacies of the pathways used to metabolize aromatic compounds.
