Abstract
The importance of surface coatings is discussed, and the difficulties facing the designer in the selection of the optimum coating material and deposition technique for any particular application are highlighted. In an effort to overcome these problems a computer-based approach to the design-for-coating problem is developed. This utilizes new Rules-Based principles, thereby facilitating self-optimization. The paper describes a polymeric coating selection program designed to demonstrate the system.
